Along with the New Year often comes a time of new aspirations. With Winter still upon us in the UK, it can be challenging to motivate ourselves to engage in activities which could bring about social connection. Check out some January tips below to tackle loneliness:
- Routine – Consider waking up 30 minutes earlier or using your time differently in the morning to include a walk, alone or with others, saying hello to passersby. If you prefer to stay at home, you could join a virtual exercise class, such as yoga, to meet others whilst getting in some physical activity to start your day.
- Get crafty – Arts and crafts are a low budget way to produce your own unique masterpiece, whilst improving wellbeing.
- Plan a trip – Look ahead to somewhere or someone you would like to visit and plan with friends or family a getaway for a break. This could support maintaining connections or forming new ones, with people or places.
- Put the tele on – Shorter days often lead to spending more time indoors. Consider watching a little television if you are feeling lonely, as people can make connections to voices or characters.
- Join the club – Have a look in your local newspaper, notice boards or online for a variety of clubs you could join to spend time with like-minded individuals. If you can’t find what you’re looking for, consider starting your own club. From learning a new language, pottery painting or building model cars, there are plenty of options!
- Down time – Treat yourself to a wellness day of healthy food, a relaxing bath and a good book. Consider picking up a musical instrument and learning your favourite song. Being alone does not necessarily lead to feelings of loneliness.
